Visit Gordon’s Barbershop in the Heart of Historic Cherry
Where tradition reigns and legacy lives.
Gordon’s is one of Charlotte, NC’s oldest Barbershops. The building, at the heart of Cherry’s business district, was built in 1930 and has been under the ownership of the James & Ruthie Hamlin family since the early 1990's. In 1935, the space was converted from an eating establishment into a barbershop that has served the Cherry neighborhood and beyond ever since. In fact, an original barber's pole that still stands in front of the building has a 1935 inscription.
In 2000, at the personal invitation of Mr. Hamlin, Gordon’s Barbershop (owned by Michael & Wanda Gordon) became the proprietor of the historical barbershop space, and is currently celebrating its 35th year of business in Charlotte and 26th year of business in Cherry. Former proprietors of the historic barbershop space, formerly Cherry's Barbershop, include Mr. Tom Pheiffer, Mr. George "Uncle George" Ardrey, Reverend Clement Morris, Sr., & Mrs. Wilma Cooke Brown--one of the first African American female barbers in Charlotte.
Mr. Gordon has made running and preserving the business, at the heart of the Cherry community, his life’s work. He takes pride in the building's historic details, including original plaster walls and stamped tin ceilings. The walls are covered with photos and articles from the business's early days, as well as pictures of modern celebrities like Cam Newton and Kon Knueppel who patronize the business.
Gordon’s Barbershop is a welcoming, inclusive space. Stop in anytime to check out this historic gem, even if you don’t need a haircut. The staff is friendly and will be happy to show you around. If you do need a trim, you can book online or just stop in. Walk-ups are welcome.
